چکیده

A theory of the competition between fusion and quasi-fission in a heavy fusing system is proposed, which is based on a master equation and the two-center shell model. Fusion and quasi-fission arise from a diffusion process in an ensemble of nuclear shapes evolving towards the thermal equilibrium. The master equation describes the diffusion of the nuclear shapes due to quantum and thermal fluctuations. Other crucial physical effects like dissipation, ground-state shell effects, diabatic effects and rotational effects are also incorporated into the theory. The fusing system moves in a dynamical (time-dependent) collective potential energy surface which is initially diabatic and gradually becomes adiabatic. The microscopic ingredients of the theory are obtained with a realistic two-center shell model based on WoodsSaxon potentials. Numerical calculations for several reactions leading to 256No are discussed. Among other important conclusions, the results indicate that (i) the diabatic effects play a very important role in the onset of fusion hindrance for heavy systems, and (ii) very asymmetric reactions induced by closed shell nuclei seem to be the best suited to synthesize the heaviest compound nuclei.

Dynamical collective potential energy landscape: its impact on the competition between fusion and quasi-fission in a heavy fusing system

Abstract. A realistic microscopically-based quantum approach to the competition between fusion and quasi-fission in a heavy fusing system is applied to several reactions leading to 256No. Fusion and quasi-fission are described in terms of a diffusion process of nuclear shapes through a dynamical collective potential energy landscape which is initially diabatic and gradually becomes adiabatic. T...

Quantum microscopic approach to low-energy heavy ion collisions

The Time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory is applied to the study of heavy ion collisions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The competition between fusion and nucleon transfer mechanisms is investigated. For intermediate mass systems such as O+Pb, proton transfer favors fusion by reducing the Coulomb repulsion. A comparison with sub-barrier transfer experimental data shows that pairin...

Studying Heavy-ion Reactions using the Mass- Angle Distribution (MAD) Technique

Super-heavy elements [1] can only be formed by fusing two massive nuclei. These elements are predicted to be stabilised by nuclear shell effects associated with near-spherical shapes around new predicted neutron and proton magic numbers. Their cross section of formation is inhibited by several orders of magnitude by the premature breakup of the elongated di-nuclear system known as quasi-fission...

Dynamical approach to heavy ion-induced fission

Deep inelastic collisions (DICs) can compete strongly with fusion in collisions of heavy nuclei. However, standard coupled-channels calculations do not take DIC process into account. As a result, calculations have been shown to overestimate the fusion cross-section and thus lead to a discrepancy between experimental data and theoretical calculations, particularly at energies above the fusion ba...

Probing quantum many-body dynamics in nuclear systems

Quantum many-body nuclear dynamics is treated at the mean-field level with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory. Low-lying and high-lying nuclear vibrations are studied using the linear response theory. The fusion mechanism is also described for light and heavy systems. The latter exhibit fusion hindrance due to quasi-fission. Typical characteristics of quasi-fission, such as contact t...
